This unique long steel SHIRRing crochET needle fits THROUGH your hand. Your middle finger bends around it. That stablilizes the action so you pull fabric OFF the needle and ONTO the cord stitch. Use it for all your crochet, and especially my Shirrét™ rug method. It’s a relaxed hold for ‘no arthritis’. You are crocheting string THROUGH cloth with easy-going stitches. This makes a 3/4 inch thick soft, plush pattern from the EDGES of fabric that’s completely reversible. The stitches are hidden inside! We are shirring fabric scrap strips with the special needle, and crocheting THROUGH them with string, to get rugs, hats, mats, cozies – colorful fashion and home decor.
Crochet ‘cheap-and-cheerful’, and pure Luxury – from fabric scraps! Cut up old clothes of wool, cotton, polyester, silk ties, to recycle them, or store-bought for bright accents.
This method was named Shirret by Louise McCrady in 1968, in Connecticut US. Louise and her mother Katrin Hart Ent Benson, ILGWU Indianapolis, developed and taught and wrote their methods starting in the 1930s. Our special needle is designed to SHIRR scraps, crochet a stitch with cotton string and pull it THROUGH the fabric. Stitch and pull a fold onto it, Stitch and pull a fold onto it, in a nice rhythm, for a long-lasting, rich textile.
I manufacture all my products in the US. We are The Original Authority and Source for Shirrét™ supplies since the 1930s and 1960s. Four generations of McCrady contribute to Shirrét™, from Speedway Indianapolis, West Hartford, NYC and Madison Connecticut seacoast.
